U.S. Marshals in New Jersey shot and killed one of New York’s most wanted fugitives on Wednesday following an arrest attempt related to armed robbery.
Shamar Leggette was allegedly involved in the 2022 livestreamed robbery of Brooklyn bishop Lamor Whitehead, and he died after he opened fire on law enforcement at an MHO Inn and Suites in Monmouth Junction, according to a report.
Leggette, a 41-year-old career criminal, began shooting after authorities surrounded the hotel with the intention of taking him into custody.
A woman inside with him exited the premises before the criminal began firing, the report noted.
Prior to his death, Leggette reached third on New York’s most wanted fugitive list, served at least two stints in prison, and was a lead suspect in the viral church robbery of New York City’s “Bling Bishop,” according to the report.

That incident saw at least three masked men enter Leaders of Tomorrow International Ministries in July 2022 and rob the pastor, Whitehead, of roughly $1 million of jewelry during a livestreamed sermon.
Leggette was also wanted for suspected crimes in Queens and Rhode Island, according to the report.
