The United States government has sent a formal communication to the European Commission demanding explanations for the decree issued by President Pedro Sánchez, which seeks to massively regularize hundreds of thousands of immigrants in an irregular situation.

According to diplomatic sources, this written note warns of “serious concerns” regarding the impact of this decision not only for Spain but for the entire European Union, where authorities are striving to maintain strict control over borders and immigration policies.

The North American offensive, driven by senior officials from President Donald Trump’s administration, sends a clear signal that Washington is closely monitoring Madrid’s irresponsible policies, which contradict the global trend toward strict and controlled immigration limits.

Meanwhile, Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Migration and Interior, has warned Sánchez’s government that a residence permit “is not a blank check” and that regularizations must not have “negative consequences” for other member states.

Brunner emphasized that European rules exist to prevent overflows and side effects that harm neighboring nations, sending a direct message to Madrid: respect the principle of shared responsibility.

Sánchez’s decree, promoted alongside his partners from Podemos and Sumar, aims to grant residence and work permits to between 500,000 and 840,000 irregular immigrants who have been in Spain since before December 31, 2025.

This measure, de facto, allows their mobility across the entire Schengen area and has been described by many sectors as “an assault on sovereignty and national security”, since it was passed by decree without parliamentary debate and without consulting Brussels.

WATCH:

In the European Parliament, the measure has sparked concern and rejection among conservative and centrist forces. They point out that this regularization contradicts EU migration agreements, which since 2008, and reconfirmed in 2024, require selective and coordinated processes, not unilateral decisions that open the door to uncontrolled flows.

Within Spain, the opposition has harshly attacked Sánchez and his allies. Leaders like Alberto Núñez Feijóo have denounced that the government has no right to “gift legal residency to anyone” and have described the regularization as “irresponsible” and dangerous for national security.

Critics warn that Spain, far from strengthening its security, is sending a contradictory message while other Western countries, including the United States under Trump, have tightened immigration policies and increased efforts to deport irregular entrants.

Sánchez’s policy represents a direct challenge to order, law, and sovereignty, weakening strong borders that the United States and responsible democracies defend as essential.

The Spanish left, in its obsession with uncontrolled openness, sacrifices social cohesion and legal order in pursuit of a utopian vision that only generates chaos and vulnerability for law-abiding citizens.
