Vicious cycle: Biden aides sound the alarm on president’s lack of awareness about age problem

Aides surrounding President Joe Biden are growing concerned about his age as he continues to run with a heavy campaign schedule on top of his presidential duties.

The problem of Biden’s age surfaced during his 2020 campaign, but he was successfully elected to the White House at 77 years old.

This time around, current and former Biden aides are saying the president might not have a grasp on the widespread voter concern surrounding his age and the strain of a massive workload, according to a Tuesday report from Axios.

“He is his own worst enemy when it comes to his schedule,” a former Biden aide said.

First lady Jill Biden is reportedly involved in the president’s schedule and diet, pushing him to eat healthier.

Jill and Joe Biden keep “an eye on one another’s schedules for the sake of balance — and they are far from the only couple in the administration who does that,” a White House official said.

While the president’s love of ice cream is well documented, the first lady has been known to pressure him to improve his diet, his sister Valerie Biden Owens described in her book last year, Growing Up Biden: A Memoir.

As Biden closes in on his fourth and final presidential campaign, reports claim he is worried about his low approval rating as former President Donald Trump, the GOP front-runner, leads him in polling for key swing states. Biden rounded up his closest advisers for a meeting in the White House residence before the Thanksgiving holiday, pressing his campaign for answers and solutions to why his poll numbers have been so low despite recent economic boosts, the Washington Post reported on Monday.

Since the public and Biden’s voter base have increasingly expressed concern over his mental fitness, he has made his age the punchline multiple times.

“Try being 110 and doing it again,” the president said in June regarding his reelection. He joked to a different crowd the same month, “I know I’m 198 years old.”

This fall, he told his backers at an event in New York, “I’ve never been more optimistic about our country’s future in the 800 years I’ve served.”

Biden’s 2024 campaign recently dispelled worries about whether he is fit to hold another term as president by using his packed schedule as evidence of his capabilities.

Responding to a video shown on CBS’s America Decides of voters saying Biden is too old to run for office, Biden’s campaign manager, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, touted the president’s packed schedule.

“I think that it’s important we continue to show the work that the president’s doing day in and day out,” Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez pointed to Biden’s overseas travel to the Group of 20 summit in India and Vietnam, adding, “I think it’s a perfect example of the kind of schedule that he continues to keep, the kind of hard work that he continues to do on behalf of the American people, and the fact that he continues to show really strong, steady leadership at every turn.”

Biden celebrated his 81st birthday last month and would end his second term at 86 if reelected.
