VIDEO: Trump Previews China Negotiations in Switzerland, Says He Will Not Pull Back Tariffs and Signals Major Leverage Ahead of Tariff Talks

President Trump on Wednesday previewed upcoming meetings between U.S. and Chinese officials in Switzerland this week amid the ongoing tariff war.

Chinese imports to the U.S. are currently slapped with 145% tariffs as the President seeks to ensure fair trade between the two countries and encourage Americans to buy American goods.

President Trump took questions from reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday during a swearing-in ceremony for the new U.S. Ambassador to China, David Perdue.

Asked what he hopes will come out of scheduled negotiations in Switzerland this week, Trump responded by implying that the U.S. has nothing to lose and will use the leverage to secure a big win for our country. “We were losing a trillion dollars a year, now we’re not losing anything,” he said.

Watch:

Reporter: What do you hope to come out of the talks with China in Switzerland?

Trump: We’ll see. We were losing a trillion dollars a year, now we’re not losing anything. That’s the way I look at it. We were losing with China on trade a trillion dollars a year– more actually. But let’s say a trillion. You know what we’re losing now? Nothing. That’s not bad.

When asked if he was willing to cease his tariffs against China for the purposes of negotiating, Trump gave a blunt one word answer.

Per Fox:

Top officials with the Trump administration are expected to meet with a high-level Chinese delegation this week in Switzerland, marking the first major talks between the two countries since President Donald Trump ignited a trade war based on tariffs on imports.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and trade representative Jamieson Greer are expected to represent the U.S. as they meet with their Chinese counterparts in Geneva.

“Economic security is national security, and President Donald J. Trump is leading the way both at home and abroad for a stronger, more prosperous America,” Bessent said. “I look forward to productive talks as we work towards rebalancing the international economic system towards better serving the interests of the United States.”

The meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday, and during his time in Switzerland, Bessent will meet with Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter.

The Gateway Pundit will continue to provide updates on U.S-China trade negotiations.
