Virginia Democrat blames ‘division and distraction’ from Netanyahu for creating ‘opportunity’ for Hamas attacks

Virginia state Sen. Scott Surovell was blasted on social media for his post following the news of Hamas’s unprecedented terrorist attacks on Israel over the weekend.

“The division and distraction created by Netanyahu‘s judicial power grab created an opportunity for these attacks in the same way House Republicans’ civil war creates opportunities for other country’s to take advantage American disorganization,” Surovell, a Democrat, said Sunday on social media, linking to a March 23 article by columnist David Ignatius about how the political drama in Israel earlier this year could hurt national security interests.

The social media post received blowback with numerous comments.

Political communications consultant Zack Roday called Surovell’s comments ” disgusting” and “shameful.”

“Virginia Democrats siding with the terrorists — quite a look,” political commentator Matt Whitlock said.

The Virginia Project responded in a social media post, “Virginia Democrats are going all-in on a pro-terrorism stance. Not really a surprise.”

“Are you serious?” Garren Shipley, communications director for the speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates, said.

“VA Democrat state senator responds to vicious terror attack on Israel by engaging in victim blaming,” former Prince William County, Virginia, school board member Willie Deutsch said.

“Classy. You must be seeking a Democrat leadership role to make a comment this insensitive and ignorant,” another social media user said.

One social media user posted, “700 Jews dead and this politician calls it an ‘opportunity.’ Sick.”

Surovell represents the 36th District in the Virginia Senate, encompassing parts of Fairfax, Prince William, and Stafford counties.

The Virginia state senator could reportedly end up in a leadership role in the Virginia General Assembly in 2024 due to Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw entering retirement.

This November will be a key election for Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) when the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates are concurrently holding elections. In the 2021 elections, Republicans gained the governorship and the House of Delegates in Virginia, but the Virginia Senate continues to be controlled by Democrats.

Surovell has called on Virginians to “send a message” in the coming elections.

“Politico says that VA’s elections will be a barometer for America and ‘a decisive victory for either party would be a flashing-red indicator’ – Let’s send a message!” he wrote on Saturday.
