Wall Street law firm plans job applicant screenings for anti-Israel protesters – Washington Examiner

A New York City-based law firm that has represented Goldman Sachs, Google, and other companies plans to screen job applicants to see whether they have participated in anti-Israel protests, a partner at the firm said.

Sullivan & Cromwell, one of the most deep-pocketed law firms in the United States, is using a background check company called HireRight to investigate applicants, including public records such as their social media profiles, the New York Times reported. Left-wing demonstrations against the Jewish state have continued across the world following the Hamas-led Oct. 7 attack on Israel last year.

“People are taking their outrage about what’s going on in Gaza and turning it into racist antisemitism,” said Joseph C. Shenker, a senior chairman at Sullivan & Cromwell.

The firm, specifically, is looking for applicants who made antisemitic statements “triggering” to Jewish people, Shenker said. One of his notable clients in the past was Bill Ackman, the billionaire hedge fund manager who has been vocal in support of Israel on social media after Oct. 7.

Sullivan & Cromwell and other law firms wrote a letter to law school deans recently asking them to ensure students are punished for “acts of harassment and threats of violence” against Jews, adding, “As employers who recruit from each of your law schools, we look to you to ensure your students who hope to join our firms after graduation are prepared to be an active part of workplace communities that have zero tolerance policies for any form of discrimination or harassment, much less the kind that has been taking place on some law school campuses.”

The applicant screening plans at the law firm underscore how some companies, after Oct. 7, are seeking to ensure they are hiring competent staffers and not activists with an agenda who could potentially disrupt operations.

Davis Polk, another law firm, rescinded job offers for Ivy League law school students last year over students being connected to anti-Israel activism.

“What’s happening here is really just the implementation of basic workforce decency standards,” Neil Barr, chairman of Davis Polk, said of Sullivan & Cromwell’s plans.
