Washington Examiner’s Byron York says Hur report has ‘absolutely’ increased concerns on Biden’s age

The Washington Examiner’s Byron York stated that the recent report from special counsel Robert Hur has expanded people’s scrutiny of President Joe Biden‘s age, along with his ability to competently serve as commander in chief.

The report, released earlier this month, revealed that the president could not be charged for his handling of classified documents due to Biden’s “poor memory,” which has been a major talking point on how this report could affect Biden’s 2024 reelection chances. York, the chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner, was asked if concerns on this issue have gone up following the report, to which York said they “absolutely” have.

“The Robert Hur report really just opened up this issue, which was a pretty big issue even before that,” York said on Fox News’s America Reports Wednesday. “And so everybody has an opinion about this because they’ve watched the president, and if they have watched him for a few years they have watched him slow down before their eyes.”

York added that not only is Biden’s age a problem for the Democratic Party, it is one that ultimately cannot be fixed. He also noted that some have suggested Biden use humor to poke fun at his age, in the same way former President Ronald Reagan did. However, York said he doubted such a strategy would be effective, as Reagan was almost a decade younger than Biden when he was president.

Beyond this, York suggested that the Hur report contributes to a level of unfairness that some voters perceive between how Biden is treated compared to how former President Donald Trump is treated. Trump is facing numerous indictments ahead of the 2024 presidential election, with some of these indictments stemming from him storing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The Hur report has created concern within the Democratic Party, with Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) saying that the party is in “trouble.” Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-CO), meanwhile, has said he is “nervous” about the implications of the report but that he is “pretty confident” voters will “make the right decision.”

Going forward, House Republican leaders are aiming to launch a plan that would keep questions surrounding Biden’s mental competency in the spotlight. Part of this plan would be requesting Hur’s testimony about Biden’s storage of classified documents.
