“The Supreme Court delivered a resounding defeat for racism when it deemed race-based college admissions unconstitutional,” Owens said in a statement. “Ending the era of affirmative action in higher education is of the utmost importance as we work to build a system that rewards perseverance, merit, and hard work rather than skin color. I am looking forward to gaveling in our subcommittee to examine how this landmark ruling will positively shape university policies now and in the future.”

Affirmative action was struck down in a June 29 court decision after the group Students for Fair Admissions brought forward a lawsuit against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.
