The House is convening on Tuesday to select a new speaker after Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was ousted from the position two weeks ago.

The Republicans have selected Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) as their nominee, and the Democrats will nominate House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

Jordan, a founding member of the hard-line House Freedom Caucus, is trying to receive the necessary GOP support to win the speaker’s gavel. At least eight House Republicans are considered holdouts, with some refusing to back the House Judiciary Committee chairman.

The Republican caucus originally voted in favor of House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) for speaker, but he dropped out of the race when he could not secure the votes needed to take the gavel.

Jordan will need 217 votes to become speaker. With multiple holdouts, the Ohio Republican could need several rounds and possibly days to win the speakership.

The voting is scheduled to begin at noon on Tuesday.
