Thune defeated Sens. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Rick Scott (R-FL) to succeed outgoing Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who will still serve in the Senate through at least January 2027.
Republicans regained control of the Senate in last week’s elections and are set to have a 53-47 majority after four years of being in the minority in the upper chamber of Congress.
