What time do polls close? A 2024 state-by-state guide – Washington Examiner

Election Day is fast approaching, with polls showing a tight race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Although a record number of voters have already cast their ballots ahead of Nov. 5, many U.S. citizens are heading to the polls on Tuesday to vote for local, state, and presidential candidates.

As you head to cast your 2024 ballot, the Washington Examiner has compiled a guide with everything you need to know about what time polls close in all 50 states. All times listed are local.

Alabama

  • Polls close at 7 p.m.
  • While the official Alabama time zone is the Central Time Zone, several Alabama cities have elected to use the Eastern Time Zone

Alaska

  • Polls close at 8 p.m.
  • Alaska covers two time zones

Arizona

  • Polls close at 7:30 p.m.

  • Polls close at 8 p.m.

  • Indiana is split into two time zones — 12 counties are in the Eastern Time Zone

  • While most counties are in the Central Time Zone, four counties are in the Mountain Time Zone, meaning they close an hour earlier.

  • Some polling locations close at 7 p.m. while others close at 7:30 p.m. or 8 p.m., depending on the municipality

New Jersey

  •  Polls close at 8 p.m.

  • Polls close at 7 p.m.
  • While the majority of North Dakota counties are located in the Central Time Zone, eight counties in the southwest part of the state are in the Mountain Time Zone

  • Polls close at 7:30 p.m.

  • Polls close at 7 p.m. local time for Central and Mountain Time Zones

Tennessee

  • Most polls close at 7 p.m. Central
  • Tennessee is split between two time zones. While cities including Memphis and Nashville are situated in the Central Time Zone, 30 Tennessee counties run on Eastern time and polls close there an hour later than in the rest of the state

Texas

  • Polls close at 7 p.m.
  • While most of the state is in the Central Time Zone, part of Texas lies in the Mountain Time Zone
