White House asks for privacy for Princess Kate after ‘terrible’ cancer diagnosis – Washington Examiner

The White House has asked for privacy on behalf of British Prince William and his wife Catherine after the Princess of Wales announced her cancer diagnosis in a prerecorded video.

“All of us just heard the terrible news. Our thoughts are with the Duchess of Cambridge and her family members and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters Friday, using Catherine’s other title. “It’s important that we respect her privacy.”

Jean-Pierre said she had no discussions between President Joe Biden and the United Kingdom‘s royal family to read out.

Jean-Pierre started her press briefing shortly after Kensington Palace shared the video of Catherine, 42. In the recording, the princess disclosed that doctors found cancerous cells after she underwent abdominal surgery in January and that she has since commenced preventative chemotherapy. Like King Charles III, Catherine did not specify the type of cancer for which she is being treated, only describing it a “huge shock.”

“I am well and getting stronger every day,” Catherine said. “As a family, we now need some time, space, and privacy.”

“For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope,” she said. “You are not alone.”

Catherine has been under intense scrutiny amid an absence from public duties, particularly after she was criticized for editing photographs circulated of her and her three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, to celebrate Mother’s Day in Britain.

Last month, King Charles, 76, similarly announced his own cancer diagnosis, only detailing that it is not prostate cancer after he also underwent prostate surgery.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties,” Buckingham Palace said in February.
