White House attacks MTG for ‘unconstitutional’ impeachment ‘stunt’

The White House released a memo on Thursday criticizing the House Republicans’ effort to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

“Instead of working across the aisle to find bipartisan solutions to strengthen border security and fix an immigration system that has been broken for decades, House Republicans are choosing to play extreme, far-right politics by following leader Marjorie Taylor Greene into a baseless impeachment stunt targeting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas,” White House oversight spokesman Ian Sams wrote.

Republicans on the Homeland Security Committee have claimed Mayorkas has been unwilling to work with them, something the Department of Homeland Security disputes.

The White House’s critical memo comes as House Republicans are set to hold their second impeachment hearing for Mayorkas on Thursday, which will focus on victims of crimes perpetrated by illegal immigrants. The hearing will be titled “Voices for the Victims: The Heartbreaking Reality of the Mayorkas Border Crisis.”

The Mayorkas impeachment effort represents a troubling trend, according to Sams.

“This stunt by House Republicans is just the latest example of their blatant disregard for the Constitution and our democratic system of government,” he said.

Sams listed what he said were other efforts to circumvent the Constitution. He first cited House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), who voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election and led an amicus brief to support a lawsuit aimed at invalidating electoral wins for President Joe Biden in Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The suit was rejected.

The White House oversight spokesman also pointed to Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY), who he said were trying to “attack the justice system” and lead a “baseless” quest to impeach Biden.
