White House chastises House Republicans for ‘civil war’ border talk

The White House is scolding House Republicans who are encouraging Texas to ignore the Supreme Court‘s decision regarding the use of razor wire along the border.

Reps. Clay Higgins (R-LA) and Chip Roy (R-TX) are among the lawmakers who have criticized the Supreme Court for siding with President Joe Biden‘s administration in permitting Border Patrol agents to remove the wire Texas put in place, with Higgins claiming Biden is “staging a civil war.”

“None of it is helpful,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told the Washington Examiner. “That rhetoric is not helpful. The political stunts are not helpful. They’re just not. They’re not dealing with the issue that we’re seeing at the border.”

Jean-Pierre, who said she did not have anything to preview concerning whether Biden had spoken with congressional negotiators this week about his national security federal funding supplemental request, relayed the president’s appreciation to the Senate for working “in a bipartisan way” and in “good faith.”

“You have Democrats coming together, you have Republicans coming together in the Senate to actually figure out how, what are the policy changes that we can, meaningful policy changes that can be put forth, what’s the funding stream that is needed to deal with the border and that’s what we want to see and that’s what we appreciate,” she said. “All of the political stunts that, some of them put Border Patrol agents’ lives in danger, it puts migrants’ lives in danger, that’s not helpful. That is not helpful at all.”

Earlier in the briefing, Jean-Pierre called the wire ineffective, adding that “it got in the way” of Border Patrol agents. White House national security spokesman John Kirby also was pressed on the matter.

“Why are you guys making it easier for people to enter the country illegally?” one reporter asked.

“I don’t believe we are,” Kirby responded.

“You guys sued to cut razor wire,” the reporter continued.

“The Border Patrol needed access,” Kirby replied.

Higgins made the suggestion Monday afternoon on X, the social media platform previously known as Twitter, shortly after the Supreme Court announced its decision.

“Media: ‘Congressman Higgins, the Supreme Court just ruled in favor of the Biden Admin over the State of Texas, saying that the federal government can remove physical barriers at the border put in place by Texas. What are your thoughts?’” Higgins recalled being asked.

“Me: ‘My thoughts are that the feds are staging a civil war, and Texas should stand their ground,’” he wrote.
