Who let the dogs out? Biden spokeswoman ‘not nervous at all’ around German Shepherd
October 05, 2023 03:19 PM
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre brushed off questions Thursday about Commander, President Joe Biden‘s German Shepherd puppy who has bitten at least a dozen Secret Service agents.
Commander made headlines in late September for his 12th reported attack on a Secret Service officer. The Bidens brought Commander into the White House after sending a previous dog, Major, to live with friends in Delaware following a similar pattern of aggressive behavior toward White House staff.

“Absolutely not,” Jean-Pierre told reporters Thursday when asked if she has ever felt unsafe around the first canine. “I’ve seen Commander many times, and I was never wary, and I’ve never been bitten.”
Pressed if any of the communications team had ever felt nervous around Commander, Jean-Pierre reiterated a statement put out by Elizabeth Alexander, Jill Biden’s communications director.
“The president and the first lady care deeply about the safety of those who work at the White House and those who protect them every day. They remain grateful for the patience and support of the U.S. Secret Service and all involved as they continue to work through a solution,” Jean-Pierre recited. “Commander is not presently at the White House, on the White House campus while next steps are evaluated.

“I’m not sure why this has to do anything with me. I was just not nervous at all. So that is not a concern for me. That is not something that — I can’t speak to anything else outside of what you have heard from the first lady’s office, and so I’ll just really leave that there.”
