Wisconsin city begging Biden for help while siege of migrants continues

Officials in a small Wisconsin city are begging for help from President Joe Biden as residents continue to face a “rapid increase” in the number of illegal immigrants from Venezuela and Nicaragua.

Whitewater, Wisconsin, has a population of just under 15,000 people, according to the 2020 census, but it has been under siege by over a thousand fresh illegal immigrants since the start of 2022.

The resulting crisis has caused many residents to reach a breaking point, and a letter was authored to Biden in December pleading for assistance, according to a report citing the letter

“We estimate that there are roughly 800-1,000 individuals who have arrived here in that short time,” the letter read. It was signed by Police Chief Daniel Meyer and City Manager John Weidl.

“Regardless of the individual situations [for coming to Whitewater], these people need resources like anyone else, and their arrival has put great strain on our existing resources.”

The invasion of a massive population that speaks little to no English has caused “major challenges,” according to the letter.

“We have found approximately three times the number of unlicensed drivers on our roadways compared to previous years,” it states. “Our officers have also seen first-hand the terrible living conditions that many migrants are living in.”

“None of this information is shared as a means of denigrating or vilifying this group of people,” the letter adds. “We know that challenges will come with the addition of any significant number of people to a City. In fact, we see great value in the increasing diversity that his group brings to our community. We simply need to ensure that we can continue to properly service this group, and the entirety of the City of Whitewater.”

The letter ends with a desperate call for resources.

On Jan. 8, Rep. Bryan Steil (R-WI) wrote to Chief Meyer, ensuring his support for the city of Whitewater.

“I recently read your letter to President Joe Biden requesting assistance to the large influx of new migrants to the City of Whitewater. As you are aware from our work on this issue, you and people of Whitewater have my strong support for your efforts, and I can assure you that I will continue to work on resolving these challenges,” Steil’s message read.

“The safety of families and children in Whitewater is my priority. The illegal activity in our community caused by the border crisis is why I’m working to force the Biden administration to change course and implement policies that will secure the border.”
