Radio host Charlamagne Tha God told Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Thursday that having President Joe Biden as the presumptive nominee damages the reputation of the Democratic Party.
Democrats have floated Whitmer as a potential replacement for Biden alongside Vice President Kamala Harris and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, among others. Charlamagne on “The Breakfast Club” radio show told Whitmer these Democrats, as well as Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Democratic Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, would represent stronger leadership for the party than Biden, saying they “should be offended” by the president’s position at the top of the ticket. “I often feel like y’all should be offended, and the reason I say y’all should be offended is because people will say, ‘Is this the best America has to offer? Is this the best the Democratic Party has to offer in Biden?’ And it does kind of make yourself and the Wes Moore’s and the Shapiro’s and the Buttigieg’s and the VP look like, damn… they’re all better, to me, than the current leader of the party,” Charlamagne said.
Whitmer said these individuals all have bright futures before telling Charlamagne, “I understand that sentiment.”
“I got kids; they’re 22 and 20, and they’re not as excited as I would love for them to be,” she continued. “And yet, I know they’re going to vote because they understand their rights to make their own decisions about their bodies, their ability to get housing after they graduate from college and try to get an affordable place to live. That is on their minds… They are engaged in a way that we weren’t.”
“So, the fact that maybe Joe Biden doesn’t resonate as well with every voter that’s out there, I think that every voter can see a voice, a person that is a part of this effort, that does though,” Whitmer added. “I think that that kind of Avenger-style campaign and leadership has got to be a part of how we go forward.”
Charlamagne agreed, saying he would prefer to see Biden’s surrogates rather than the president himself.
Charlamagne and his radio listeners attacked Biden on Tuesday for being a “horrible” presidential candidate.
“He’s never been a good candidate ever,” the radio host said. “And if it wasn’t for all of those unfortunate events that happened in 2020, I don’t think he’d be president now.”
