Youngkin throws support behind Winsome Earle-Sears in Virginia governor race – Washington Examiner

Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) endorsed Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears for governor and Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares for reelection in Virginia‘s 2025 statewide races.

In a statement posted to social media, Youngkin gave both high praise for their work in Virginia’s government. Youngkin said that in 2021, he, alongside Earle-Sears and Miyares, “ran as a team” and that in the 2025 race, “Winsome and Jason will once again lead the Republican team as candidates for Governor and Attorney General.”

“Both have been indispensable partners to advance our shared, commonsense conservative policies that have made Virginia the best state in America for business, backed the blue and cracked down on crime, stood strong for our military and veterans, and transformed education by raising teacher pay, re-establishing academic excellence, and empowering parents in their child’s education and life,” Youngkin said in his endorsement of the pair.

Youngkin said that Earle-Sears “has been an outstanding Lt. Governor” and that she would make a “great” governor. He said Earle-Sears is an “outspoken advocate for commonsense conservative principles and policies, a passionate voice for our military and veterans, and a relentless advocate for educational freedom and economic opportunity.” When she won the election in 2021, she became the first female lieutenant governor in Virginia and the first black woman to hold statewide office.

On Miyares for reelection, Youngkin said he has been an “exceptional” attorney general to the state. He said Earle-Sears “vigorously defends the laws of the Commonwealth” and that he “stands with law enforcement every single day.”

“There could not be a better team to carry on our success for Virginians for the next four years,” Youngkin said in his endorsement of the pair.

Youngkin is term-limited and cannot run again in 2025.

Former Virginia Rep. Abigail Spanberger appears to be a front-runner on the Democratic side of the race as she is the only one who has entered the race so far. The Virginia governor’s election typically favors the party not in control of the White House.
