House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was among the lawmakers honoring the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, on the eve of the 22nd anniversary of the fateful day.
McCarthy said at 8:46 a.m. on Monday, Congress will “recognize Patriot Day by observing a moment of silence.” It was at that time on 9/11 that the first plane hit the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City.

President Joe Biden, fresh off a visit to Vietnam, will appear at a military base in Anchorage, Alaska, on Monday to meet with more than 1,000 service members, first responders, and their families, a White House spokesperson said. The Biden administration is also set to “award $4 million in funds from the 9/11 Memorial Act grant program to the National September 11 Memorial & Memorial Plaza in New York City.”
Vice President Kamala Harris is scheduled to be at the annual ceremony hosted by the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City to remember the harrowing day. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is hosting an observance ceremony at the National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, the White House added.
The NYPD 19th Precinct, located in the Upper East Side of Manhattan, shared a remembrance on Sunday night as the World Trade Center Memorial “Tribute in Light” shined in the city.

The devastation from the terrorist attack has been felt across the more than two decades since it occurred. Just two days ago, the remains of two people who died in the attack on the World Trade Center were identified, a man and woman whose names were withheld due to requests from their families.
The news underscored the lasting effect the attack has had on the United States as the nation and its leaders wrestle with how to dismantle terrorist attempts at home and abroad.
