Allies of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) unsuccessfully attempted to table a motion to vacate the House speakership after 11 Republicans and all House Democrats voted to move forward with the motion to oust McCarthy.
Gaetz brought the motion to vacate McCarthy on Monday after he pushed forward a 45-day stopgap bill over the weekend to avoid a government shutdown, with the Florida Republican accusing the speaker of making a “Ukraine deal with Democrats” to pass aid for the country at a later date. With the motion to table having been defeated, the motion to vacate will be voted on later on Tuesday.

Not every Republican who voted against tabling the motion to vacate has said they will vote to vacate the House speaker, but six have said they will vote to vacate the chair. Democratic leadership has said their caucus will support the motion to vacate.
McCarthy had to endure 15 rounds of voting during the speaker election in January after several members of the Republican conference refused to support the California Republican. If he is vacated, a similarly prolonged speaker election may occur only nine months after McCarthy secured the speaker’s chair.
