Jim Clyburn says Biden should not be impeached ‘for being a father’ to Hunter Biden

Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) has criticized Republican lawmakers attempting to impeach President Joe Biden, arguing that the president was being “a father” to his son Hunter Biden.
Clyburn’s statement on Sunday echoes other criticisms that Democratic lawmakers have made regarding the impeachment attempt at Biden. Devon Archer, a former Burisma associate of Hunter Biden’s, testified before Congress earlier this year that Joe Biden was on the phone 20 times with his son’s business associates, to which Clyburn was asked if doing so was “appropriate.”

“Well, his associates said they were pleasantries, but I think it’s appropriate to be a father to your son,” Clyburn said. “And if your son is having a problem, and we all know the history of the problem that Hunter has with addiction, and he is being a father to his son. You don’t impeach a man for being a father to his children.”
Republican lawmaker’s attempt to impeach Biden stems from his son’s foreign business dealings and bribery allegations. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) has scheduled a hearing for Sept. 28 on the impeachment inquiry, which will examine the “constitutional and legal questions surrounding the president’s involvement in corruption and abuse of public office,” a committee spokesperson said.
The White House has criticized Comer for scheduling the hearing just two days before the deadline to fund the government for the coming fiscal year, calling it an effort to “distract from their own chaotic inability to govern and the impacts of it on the country.”
“Staging a political stunt hearing in the waning days before they may shut down the government reveals their true priorities: To them, baseless personal attacks on President Biden are more important than preventing a government shutdown and the pain it would inflict on American families,” White House spokesman Ian Sams wrote.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has stated that Hunter Biden will get subpoenaed in this investigation but that he wants more evidence to percolate over the matter before calling on the younger Biden to testify before Congress.
A recent survey showed that 48% of its 1,636 respondents thought the president did something “illegal regarding Hunter Biden.” When accounting for political party, 54% of independents said the president “definitely” or “probably” broke the law, while 85% of Republicans said the same.
