British journalist Piers Morgan spoke out against Big Tech companies that have quickly distanced themselves from podcast host Russell Brand in the wake of sexual assault allegations, describing it as “very disturbing Orwellian.”

Morgan’s statement on social media also included a photo of a letter from the U.K. government to Chris Pavlovski, the CEO of the video platform Rumble. Brand has over 1.4 million followers on the platform, and the U.K. government asked Pavlovski if it would follow YouTube’s recent decision to suspend Brand’s ability to make money on the platform.

“The British government writing to tech firms demanding they financially punish and cancel Russell Brand before he’s been through due legal process over the allegations against him is a very disturbing Orwellian development,” Morgan said, a reference to George Orwell’s 1984.

Rumble has stated that it would not “join a cancel culture mob” and rejected the request from the U.K.’s “extremely disturbing letter.” The video platform is one of the few not to part ways with Brand. Spotify recently announced that it would not remove Brand’s content on the platform and that it would only remove content directly in breach of its terms and conditions.

Four women have accused Brand of sexual assault, which was reported by the Times, the Sunday Times, and Channel 4, a British television network. Police in the U.K. said they would investigate the allegations.

In the wake of the accusations, outlets have removed content relating to Brand from their platforms, including episodes from television series in which Brand played a guest star. On Tuesday, Brand’s 2009 comedy special, Russell Brand in New York City, was reportedly removed from Paramount+, though it is not known if the special was removed in response to the allegations.

Brand has denied the allegations, describing the claims as “extremely egregious and aggressive attacks” in a video.

The comedian has also said he has postponed all of his comedy shows. “We are postponing these few remaining addiction charity fundraiser shows, we don’t like doing it — but we know you’ll understand,” Brand’s management said.
