Former President Donald Trump said Rep. Jamaal Bowman‘s (D-NY) act of pulling the fire alarm during House proceedings “may have been worse” than the actions of rioters on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump asked, “when will [Bowman’s] trial begin” and said he should “suffer their same fate,” referring to the many trials of Jan. 6 protesters for rioting at the U.S. Capitol following Trump’s loss in the 2020 election.

“Will Congressman [Jamaal] Bowman be prosecuted and imprisoned for very dangerously pulling and setting off the main fire alarm system in order to stop a Congressional vote that was going on in D.C. His egregious act is covered on tape, a horrible display of nerve and criminality,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social Sunday. “It was a very dangerous ‘Obstruction of an Official Proceeding,’ the same as used against our J-6 prisoners. Actually, his act may have been worse.”
Bowman was caught on security footage pulling a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building as Democrats looked to stall a vote on the clean continuing resolution put on the floor by Republicans.
The New Jersey representative has denied that it was intentional, stating that he was rushing to make a vote and thought the “alarm would open a door.” The United States Capitol Police is investigating the situation.
When asked for a copy of the footage circulating on social media, a USCP spokesperson told the Washington Examiner that the “mentioned video and/or images did not come from our office.”

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said he planned to “have a discussion with the Democratic Leader” about the incident, saying that it “should not go without punishment.” Rep. Lisa McClain (R-MI) has drafted a motion to censure Bowman for pulling the fire alarm, with several other Republicans joining as co-sponsors.
Several Republicans have equated the incident to Jan. 6. Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) called Bowman an “insurrectionist,” which is what the Jan. 6 protesters have been referred to as. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said Bowman should be prosecuted by the Justice Department using the same law to prosecute “J6 defendants.”
