White House condemns swatting trend targeting officials linked to Trump cases

The White House condemned Thursday a recent uptick in false swatting operations carried out against judicial officials linked to former President Donald Trump‘s legal battles.

Both special counsel Jack Smith and New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron were the targets of attempted swatting incidents in recent weeks. An anonymous caller attempted to have police storm Smith’s home on Christmas Day, claiming he had shot his wife, while Engoron received a bomb threat at his home on Long Island on Jan. 4.

Both calls are being investigated, and no arrests have been made.

Asked about the calls during Thursday’s press briefing, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby referred questions to the Justice Department before adding, “Obviously, we don’t want to see anybody come and do these kinds of threats and make sure that they can do their job, particularly in jurisprudence in a safe and effective way.”

Later in the briefing, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre condemned the swatting calls much more forcefully.

“We condemn any form of threats or violence against any judges in any group,” she told reporters. “So I just want to make that clear. That is something that we’re certainly steadfast on continuing to say and have been very clear about that.”
