President Joe Biden will be meeting with Xi Jinping in November.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed the meeting during Tuesday’s press briefing, saying the two will engage in diplomatic conversions during a summit in San Francisco.

“We have said we want to move forward with China,” Jean-Pierre said. “We understand that, and intense competition means intense diplomacy.”

There was some confusion as to whether the press secretary was confirming that the two would meet. She later added, “I think I just confirmed it.”

Biden will visit the west coast on Nov. 14 for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders Week. There he will meet with Xi in person amid ongoing tensions between the world’s two largest economic powers.

Jean-Pierre stressed that talks between the U.S. and China are ongoing at lower levels, pointing to meetings with National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“This is an important relationship,” Jean-Pierre said. “This is about competition, that’s what we want to see with China, and this is going to be an important diplomatic conversation that we’re going to have.”
