President Joe Biden is in his third day without holding a public event, but the White House says he’s giving voters plenty of face time.
Biden made a campaign speech Monday in South Carolina and visited Texas the same day to honor a deceased congresswoman. He has not been seen publicly since, making no appearances Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday.
“The president did a three-day swing; he went to four states, he’s been out there,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during the afternoon news briefing. “He’s been able to talk directly to the American people, and we think that’s really important.”
Jean-Pierre pointed to the Charleston speech as well as one he’ll give Friday in Allentown, Pennsylvania, as evidence that Biden is connecting with voters.
“He’s looking forward to being out there tomorrow,” Jean-Pierre said.
Reporters brought the topic up both Wednesday and Thursday, asking what the president has been up to this week.
“Who decided that the American people are best served by seeing less of the president?” one reporter asked.
Jean-Pierre said Biden has held a number of non-public meetings, including with the sister of Russian detainee Paul Whelan, having lunch with Vice President Kamala Harris, and speaking with his national security team, in the interim.

But Republicans argue that Biden’s light load is cause for concern.
“Biden’s schedule has looked more like a retiree than a commander-in-chief,” Republican National Committee spokesman Jake Schneider wrote in an email blast. “Americans will send Biden on a forced retirement in November.”
